At the Crossroads of Mind and Medicine: The Future of Psychiatry Unveiled

Keynote Speech at Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights

The future of psychiatry is being shaped not only by science, but by the stories that connect us — genetic, cultural, and historical. Speaking at the Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Human Rights reminded me that healing is more than treatment; it’s an evolving dialogue between mind, medicine, and humanity itself. As we reflect on the past and present of healing, psychiatry stands at a crossroads — one where compassion, curiosity, and courage are redefining how we understand the human experience and the shared duty of care that unites us all.

I had the honor of speaking at the Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Human Rights on Future Healing at the Crossroads: Past, Present, and Future.

We reflected on how evolution mirrors humanity’s pursuit of understanding — from the ancient roots of healing to the modern science of the mind.

I spoke about how our genetic, historical, and cultural stories shape mental health, and how clinicians can honor those narratives in our daily practice.

My own path — from Novruz, meaning renewal, to Future Psychiatry — has been guided by one belief: that healing is a universal right and a shared human duty.
The students and faculty at Cornell reminded me that the next generation of clinicians isn’t just inheriting medicine — they’re redefining it through compassion, curiosity, and courage.
